No Charges against Trump in Mueller Probe
In a resounding victory for United States President Donald Trump, an in-depth investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller has determined that the President did not coordinate with Russia during his election in 2016.
The report, which has been painstakingly compiled over the past two years, was at the center of the controversy which has haunted the Trump Presidency since its inception. The seeming exoneration by Mr. Mueller is likely to significantly strengthen the President’s power, and call into question whether the scrutiny of Mr. Trump by the Democratic party was justified.
The decision by Mr. Mueller not to charge President Trump only came into the public view on Sunday, when the Attorney General William Barr published a summary of the report. In his overview of the investigation, Mr. Barr quoted an vital line in Mr. Mueller’s document that, “while this report does not conclude that President Trump committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.” Since Mr. Mueller did not recommend charges against the President, the Attorney General has also decided not to pursue any action against the President as well.
As soon as the findings came to light, President Trump made his happiness clear. On Sunday he tweeted out, “No Collusion, No Obstruction, Complete and Total EXONERATION. KEEP AMERICA GREAT!”
However, Mr. Trump quickly turned away from celebration and on to revenge. On Monday, while in a meeting with Isreali President Bibi Netanyahu, the President accused those who instigated the Mueller probe of, “Very, very evil things. Very bad things. I would say treasonous things against our country.” Many predict the Trump Administration will seek to pursue high ranking Democrats who supported the investigation.
It remains to be seen whether Trump will be able to muster any sort of vengeance against the creators of the Russia probe, but it is clear that it will provide him a powerful boost in the coming months. As reelection season draws nearer, the President is finally free of the accusations of impropriety that have followed him everywhere. In addition, Mr. Trump will be sure to assert how he was right about how the investigation was a “witchhunt” and how it was a dishonest attempt to remove him from power.
Though the news does not look good for those in the Democratic party, the battle is not over yet. It is extremely likely that the House of Representatives will launch their own investigation independent of Mr. Mueller, which will most likely encompass a broader range of possible improprieties by the President, including campaign finance dishonestly, allegations of hush money, and of course, Russian collusion.
In addition to another investigation, doubts have already been raised about how innocent the President truly is. Mr. Mueller, in his report, made it very clear that he was not able to determine “beyond a reasonable doubt” that Mr. Trump and his campaign colluded with Russia. However, he also did not state that the President was completely innocent. This will give skeptics of the President more ammunition to continue to look into the possibility of his wrongdoings.
At the current moment, only the Attorney General has been given access to Mr. Mueller’s report, and the only information that any sources have is coming from his summary. It remains to be seen if the probe will be made public anytime soon, and if any damning revelations it may still come to light. Until then, it appears that President Trump is safe, for now.
