Award Winning Nigerian-American Author Pens Comics Inspired by Black Panther
Nigerian-American award-winning writer Nnedi Okorafor recently released the first in a series of comics inspired by Black Panther.
Shuri is a comic series which follows the adventures of Shuri, the sister of T’Challa, leader of the fictional country Wakanda. Viewers of the Black Panther film fell in love with the seventeen-year-old princess, who is depicted as a technological genius. Given the box office success of the film, it was no surprise that a new comic was released.
According to Marvel, “Shuri #1” “will bring a domestic conflict to the princess's table -- while she is the most at home in her lab, working to keep her country at the forefront of science and technology, Wakanda is missing its leader. Without T'Challa around, Shuri will have to decide if she will forego her own passions in order to stand up for her nation.”
Author Okorafor is no stranger to Marvel or science fiction. She has written titles such as Blessing in Disguise for Marvel's Venomverse anthology and Black Panther: Long Live The King and Wakanda Forever. Her personal titles are mostly children and young adult novels such as Akata Witch and its sequel Akata Warrior and the Binti series (Binti, Binti: The Night Masquerade, Binti: The Night Masquerade and Who Fears Death), which has been picked up by HBO as a television series with George R. R. Martin as an executive director.
In an interview with NPR in 2016, Okorafor explained how her dual heritage of Nigerian and American inspires her work: “I live on these borders - and these borders that allow me to see from multiple perspectives and kind of take things in and then kind of process certain ideas and certain stories in a very unique way.”
“Shuri #1” is available for sale online, while “Shuri #2” will be released on Nov. 21, 2018. ”Shuri #3” will be released on Dec. 19, 2018, and “Shuri #4” will be released on Jan. 23, 2019.
