The Latest from Italian Artist, Meg: Concerto imPerfetto
This week on September 29, the Italian music world gained a new album. However, Italians aren’t the only ones listening-- New Yorkers are too. Concerto imPerfetto is a compilation of live concert recordings of some of the best hits from Meg, an Italian singer-songwriter who has made waves across countries and languages during her career, which spans over 20 years. Meg is a native Neapolitan who now resides and produces in New York City.
Meg has been carefully curating her musical style throughout her career while also constantly shifting and transforming it. Her 2015 album Imperfezione features songs such as “Occhi d’Oro,” or “Golden Eyes,” a love song (that mentions Central Park!). Its music video is full of whimsical effects: moving images of sea animals or floating pitchers appearing in places such as Meg’s clothing and interacting with real, physical objects in the room.
These playful special effects are worlds away from Meg’s musical beginnings in Italy. In the early 90s, Meg was an original member of the Italian hip hop group 99 Posse. The group got its name from the social centre where it was founded, Officina 99. Social centres at this time were generally run by and for the younger populations of less developed neighborhoods in southern Italy with the goal of improving the culture and expressing the members’ political views in the neighborhoods. Often, they were established illegally and were squatted spaces, such as Officina 99.
When 99 Posse first formed, they sang in both in Italian and the Neapolitan dialect, bridging the social divide caused by the linguistic differences between Naples and northern Italy. Their songs focused on social and political issues as a form of activism through music.
It was from this uniquely shaping experience that Meg came to New York and began to reinvent herself as a solo artist, exploring the reaches of her creativity while keeping the music she was producing true to her values. The stylistic changes in her music reflect the changes in Meg’s own life as she continues to evolve both personally and artistically.
Meg’s new album Concerto imPerfetto contains songs that span several of her previous albums while also giving the uniqueness that comes from a live concert performance. In Meg’s repertoire, there is something for everyone.
